immigration psychology
As a native of Greece who formerly became a citizen of Canada and is now a citizen of the US, I have had the experience of immigration twice. I am, therefore, intimately familiar with the legal complexities and psychological challenges inherent in the immigration process. In 2011, I began consulting with immigration attorneys, offering services as an expert in immigration psychology to foreign nationals applying for immigration status in the United States.
I provide services in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Greek, to conduct psychological evaluations and psychological follow-up (where necessary) with people applying for immigration status, for the following classifications: Extreme Hardship, Waivers, Provisional Waivers, Cancellation of Removal, VAWA, Asylum, U-Visa, Competency, Medical Certification for Disability Exceptions.
The purpose of psychological evaluations for Extreme Hardship is to concisely and accurately detail the unique circumstances that make a person particularly vulnerable to hardship. For this reason, I evaluate the applicant along 14 psycho-social factors required by immigration law, in order to support the patient’s application toward a successful outcome. The evaluation includes a detailed personal history of the person being examined, along with the waiver applicant and family members in general.
Psychological evaluations for a U-Visa include a thorough assessment of the psychological trauma the patient has suffered due to crime. The interview includes family members, work colleagues, members of the client's community, and review of medical and police records. Follow-up counseling and/or referral to counseling and medical sources are offered, where needed.
The evaluation process is lengthy and thorough. I conduct evaluations in person or through Telehealth, following a signed agreement. I consult with each applicant’s immigration attorney throughout the evaluation process, to ensure that the evaluation reflects and supports the applicant’s case in the most ethical and accurate way.
